Did you know that through books in the school library students can view the world as if through "mirrors and windows".
Books, poems, and other literary works that are mirrors help students to connect with themselves. Seeing their own stories, emotions, and experiences reflected in literature helps them understand the significance of those things and feel perhaps more comfortable in the world of poetry and reading. Books or poems that are windows help students connect with lives unlike their own.
Why not start with poetry? These books are located in the 800's section of the library. We have a rich selection of African American Poetry. Click on the list below to for a few titles to start with, then explore on your own.

Famous Black Americans Activity:
Find a book about a famous Black American. Biographies are found in the 921's. Consider some books in the list below. After you find and read your book, write a summary paper of three paragraphs or more, or make a poster with a timeline of their life. Add appropriate pictures from the National Archives site here.
