FAQ

Below are some answers to some frequently asked questions. If you have any questions that aren't listed below, please ask! Reach out to Ms. Rivera in 216 for any Yearbook-related questions and see Ms. Moore in 228 for any JOURNALISM-related questions ([email protected] (424) 625-5877).

Q: Do I need to take any classes before I can apply?

A: No, not really. For acceptance into journalism classes, you don't have any prior requirements except room in your schedule. For yearbook class, you must have taken or be taking Mx. Dao's Intro to Art class.

Q: What credits can journalism or yearbook count for?

A: Both journalism and yearbook count as College Prep Electives on your A-G requirements.

Q: What if I'm not sure whether to apply for newspaper or yearbook?

A: Apply for both! Ms. Rivera and Ms. Moore each individually check applications and will be able to gauge which could be a better fit for you.

Q: What time commitment should I expect for yearbook or newspaper?

A: It depends. Yearbook requires good attendance for class periods and attend one work night per deadline (approximately once a month from 3-6 pm). Athletes will need to make up time they miss on game days to stay on deadline. Additionally, yearbook and journalism students are required to photograph at least 2 after-school events per semester.

Department leads should expect to put in extra time to complete their own assignments and assist others. Department leads will need to meet periodically.

For Journalism the editorial board spends the most time deciding which stories are published and will attend a summer boot camp, and high school conferences on the weekend. Time spent might lead to consideration into the Quill and Scroll International Honor Society.  Journalism classes also prepares for the Photo Showcase during lunch and after school along with the Art Department, and takes photographs of senior activities for the newspaper.

Q: Are staff positions and responsibilities final and unchangeable?

A: No. We will adjust leadership positions and responsibilities as needed to meet the needs of the staff and the skills and interests shown in applicants. In your applications, check all the positions that interest you or you would be willing to take on. Then explain more about which position you would prefer.

Q: How and when will I find out if I made it on staff?

A: In June, you will find out through an email sent to the email address you provided in the application. Make sure to check your email!

Q: If I make it on staff, do I need to do anything this spring or summer?

A: Over the summer, yearbook and journalism staff members will participate in a short retreat on campus.
